Attestation Essentials: Avoiding Rejection and Audit Protection

The Promoting Interoperability program is founded on attestation. As data is submitted manually rather than electronically with an audit trail, participants must agree to terms and conditions including a statement of truth. However, Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) conducts pre-payment audit of documentation demonstrating compliance with requirements for Medicaid patient encounter volume, public health reporting, and completion of a Security Risk Assessment (SRA). Participants may also be subject to post-payment audit through the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) up to six years later.

  • Avoiding rejection to ensure receipt of incentives;
  • Audit protection to make sure you won’t have to return the incentives.
