The Office of the National Coordinator’s (ONC) 21st Century Cures Act puts patients in charge of their health records through updated health IT certification criteria and a prohibition on “information blocking.”

By preventing unreasonable interference with the access, use, and exchange of electronic health information, the ONC seeks to promote innovation, competition, and choice, and to deliver transparency on the cost and outcomes of care through convenient access to records.
