Internship Program

The CHITREC Internship Program

The CHITREC Internship Program will offer you a comprehensive and pragmatic view into the dynamic world of health information technology. At CHITREC we believe that meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs) will be a transformative force to improve the quality, safety and value of health care for all Chicagoans. As a CHITREC intern, you will be part of making that change happen. You will be challenged with real project experience and introduced to the inner workings of a start-up minded organization.

Along with your project and overall experience with the organization, CHITREC will ensure that your internship will be supportive and inclusive for your individual growth. Team education and one-on-one mentoring are key to the success of the program.

CHITREC is based on Collaboration, Trust, Leadership, Service and Community. We seek individuals with the same passion and ambition to drive change now and help shape the future of health IT workforce.

Program Highlights

CHITREC paid internships feature high impact projects and experience in a start-up environment. Your time at CHITREC may vary but is based on a 3 or 6-month duration that begins either at the start of the fall quarter or summer.  Work schedules are flexible based on projects or intern commitments, but usually are 10 to 30 hours per week.

Project Areas

As an intern at CHITREC you will be assigned to work on one or more projects based on your interests, experience and the needs of the organization. The full range of projects will fall under the general categories of Technology / R&D, Outreach and Education, and HIT Implementation.

Typically a diverse team will be assembled to work each project and will be responsible for meeting set goals and deliverables. This means that you will get tangible and practical experience with your internship at CHITREC

Current and planned projects:

  • Viability of Open Source EHR products
  • Provider Mapping / Clinical Data Base Project
  • Education, Training and Curriculum Development Project
  • Provider Outreach
  • Clinical EHR Implementation
  • Organization Sustainability Strategy Project

In addition to opportunities offered directly through the extension center, CHITREC will also sponsor internship activities through partners across the Chicago area.  These partners can be part of the academic, government or commercial sector, but all partners will be committed to providing CHITREC interns with a high quality mentored experience.
